Study Guide

6. Name all enzymes used in DNA replication. What is the function of each?
*- just know that for the test, other stuff is additional.

[Topoisomerase] initiates the unwinding of the DNA.
*[Helicase] breaks hydrogen bonds as it moves and unzips the strand
*[DNA polymerase] assemble new strands of DNA by attaching a new nucleotide
[Primase] attaches a small RNA primer to the single-stranded DNA to act as a substitute 3 (remember the 3-5 thing) for polymerase to begin synthesizing from.(This RNA primer is eventually removed and substituted by another enzyme)
[Ligase] DNA polymerase can organize the bond on the 5' end of the primer, but ligase is needed to make the bond on the 3' end.
[Binding Proteins] maintains stability for replication.

7. When DNA is replicated what happens to the original strand of DNA?

The original strand is split in two new strands that have half from the old DNA and half new DNA (Did NOT come from old strand).

8. Which bases pair together during replication?

In DNA replication:
Thymine pairs with Adenine
Adenine pairs with Thymine
Cytosine pairs with Guanine
Guanine pairs with Cytosine
